What is Chiropody? The practice of Chiropody is the assessment of the foot and the treatment and prevention of diseases or disorders of the foot by therapeutic, surgical, orthotic and palliative means. Chiropody is practiced by qualified, regulated practitioners who have undergone government established and recognized programs and examinations. A Chiropodist/Podiatrist Will: Provide assessment through palpation and observation of the anatomical and mechanical structure of the lower extremity. Non weight bearing range of motion testing along with computerized gait analysis are techniques used to acquire clinical data required to create a individual treatment plan for each client. Treat dermatological conditions like nail, corns/calluses, warts. Take impression, manufacture, fit and adjust custom made orthotics. Fit, modify and assess all types of footwear. Cast and measure for custom made footwear. A Podiatrist/Chiropodist attends a single track Podiatric Medical School, where medicine, surgery, immunology, radiology and pathomechanics are among the subjects studied. The modern Podiatrist/Chiropodist is uniquely placed to provide comprehensive footcare. Podiatrist/Chiropodistsare primary care providers and are therefore qualified to assess, diagnose, prescribe and carry out treatments including minor surgical procedures, therapeutic treatments including: laser, ultrasound, iontophoresis, extracorporeal shock wave therapy and electrical treatments. Podiatric training involves extensive didactic and clinical aspects of normal and pathological mechanics of the lower limb. Additionally Podiatrist/Chiropodistsare trained in the casting and "dressing" of orthoses and subsequent fabrication of functional and accommodative orthotic devices.
