Timmins Regional Economic Outlook to be hosted by Timmins Chamber

From mining to forestry and energy, the region’s biggest business issues will be discussed and debated by attendees of the 2012 Timmins Regional Economic Outlook (TREO), to be held at the Northern College Porcupine Campus on June 6-7.

Hosted by the Timmins Chamber of Commerce and the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) Timmins Chapter, this 13th bi-annual event brings together leaders from business, government and academia to educate and help them plan for the future.

Attendees will participate in panel discussions featuring high-ranking officials across a broad range of industries and sectors from the Timmins area. These will include presentations by representatives from various mining companies such as Detour Gold, De Beers Canada and Goldcorp – Porcupine Gold Mines; local forestry operations such as Tembec; regional energy operators such as Ontario Power Generation; as well as several local entrepreneurs and government planning officials. The event will also feature an economic overview of the region by Dr. David Robinson, director, Institute of Northern Ontario Research and Development (INORD) at Laurentian University.

For the first time, TREO will also feature concurrent sessions for local human resource professionals, allowing the event to offer something for everyone. These sessions will cover a range of topics, including managing stress in the workplace, using social media to attract and retain employees, and addressing mental health in the workplace.

“This bi-annual event is a great opportunity to get your finger on the economic pulse of the region,” said Christine Leclair, president of the Timmins Chamber of Commerce.
“Because there’s representation from across all sectors, TREO offers a ‘one-stop shop’ approach to informing yourself about all the business trends and development in the Timmins area. It’s a unique event that really showcases what’s happening in the area’s business community, and it’s truly not to be missed.”

The event officially begins June 6 with a networking reception hosted by INORD and Laurentian University followed by a dinner hosted by the HRPA and the Timmins Economic Development Corporation, with a keynote speech by Paul Huschilt, owner of Tales, Talks, Training Inc., who will speak on humor habits for workplace wellness.
The panel discussions and HR sessions will begin the morning of June 7, and continue throughout the day.

Registration is open to all, with $129 (+HST) for Chamber and HRPA members, or $179 for future members. Attendees will be entered to win a three-day, two-night trip to Las Vegas, with paid airfare and hotel.
