Timmins encouraged to Shop the Neighbourhood

Timmins, November 26, 2015—The Timmins Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents to mark their calendars and prepare to Shop the Neighbourhood on Saturday, Nov. 28.

Strategically placed between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Shop the Neighbourhood is an initiative of Yellow Pages to remind Canadians of the positive impact of spending dollars locally by encouraging participating local businesses to offer special one-day-only discounts.

For the second year in a row, the Timmins Chamber is working with local businesses and Yellow Pages to help deliver the event in the community: nearly 20 Chamber members are taking part this year, offering specific discounts and deals as part of this initiative.

“The Chamber is always glad to be able to support an opportunity to highlight the many great things our businesses have to offer,” said Kurt Bigeau, president of the Timmins Chamber of Commerce.

Participating stores will be decorated with distinctive yellow items such as ribbons, stickers, balloons, tags, and window clings. They also will be featured on YP.ca and YP Shopwise, a deal-finding app that shoppers can use to access Shop The Neighbourhood promotions.

Information on Shop The Neighbourhood, including a list of participating businesses and some the specials being offered, is also available through the Timmins Chamber Facebook page.

“This event is a good way to kick off the holiday shopping season while getting out and seeing the range of goods and services available in our community,” said Bigeau.

Now in its third year, this event has been successful in promoting regional shopping opportunities. Last year, more than 200 business associations and 8,300 businesses participated across Canada, and the results from a study conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Yellow Pages indicate that:

  • Over 750,000 Canadians responded to the company’s call and shopped locally during Shop The Neighbourhood;
  • An average of $119 was spent by each person who shopped locally during Shop The Neighbourhood, with 76% of that spend ($90) directed to local businesses who participated in Shop The Neighbourhood;
  • More than $89 million was directed to neighbourhood economies, at a time of the year known for driving dollars across the border;
  • Of the 34% of Canadians who were aware of the event, one in two people’s shopping behaviour was directly influenced by the campaign’s messaging to support the small businesses in their neighbourhood.
